Buffet bum

The thing with buffet is that it brings out the hog in you. It separates the food lovers from just those with huge appetites with no regard or respect for quality of the food. In short, hogs. There was a time I was serving in a buffet setting and the people got in queue as usual. They were extraordinarily famished and I could see them trying to crane their necks to visually sample that which they would have when it was their turn.

A certain man caught my eye. This man had a hard time choosing what to have thus he heaped his plate with all the items on the buffet and his plate had an unholy amount of food. I wondered if all that would fit in him for he was quite small in stature. Plus isn’t that like bowel suicide? Mixing that much food is tempting fate and fate has a way of accepting challenges and giving you exactly what you put it up to plus a little bonus so that next time you will think before acting or speaking rashly.

As the man was precariously balancing his plate, he missed a step and the plate danced a little on his hand. He managed to maintain balance but dropped a gigantic piece of chicken. I saw him attempt to dive for it as it fell and it all played out like a movie in slow mode. You should have seen the look on his face. You’d think someone shot his favorite dog and made him watch it. He was crushed! He just stood there clearly debating whether to pick it up or not.

He looked right, and as his eyes were cruising the room towards the left, his eyes met mine. I could almost see a curse word in the look in his eyes. He looked at me and then down to the chicken and he looked distraught and angry all in one hungry package. Stifling a laugh, I walked up to him and I offered to bring him another piece of chicken. He almost hugged me with appreciation. I think I had just singlehandedly made his day by simply doing my job of looking at guests to see if they need anything.

11th Bingwa night was off the hook!!

It’s  fun it’s bright, it’s different, it’s edgy. It’s pink underwear! 🙂
Now that I have your attention, let me tell you of something awesome. Its monthly, its definite, its a must have or else your in trouble. What is it? * Drum roll…* BINGWA SPORTS QUIZ NIGHT! What did you think it was?  I digress… The 11th edition of Bingwa Sports quiz was spectacular. If you missed it, just pinch your self 40,000 times because that is how much money you just let slip away.

To newbies here, Bingwa sports quiz is held every first Wednesday of the month right here at Blanco’s Sport’s Grill. Sponsored by Super Sport, Dstv and other partners like Barclays bank, it is a monthly quiz night for sports fanatics and all those searching for a fun thing to help you unwind with your friends. The event is organized by IScan media in conjunction with Blancos Sports Grill, Super Sports, Dstv and others. The grand prize is the Kshs 40,000 that the winning team gets to walk away with, and the runners up get great branded merchandise from Super Sport and the Kenya Premier League jerseys.

This time, people came in troops and they were all guns blazing. All teams were breathing fire and itching for a fight. A mental brawl and battle of the sharpest.A team that particularly stood out in terms of energy were the van full of pakistanis. Looks like their whiskey was doing good things to them. Of noteworthy mention was the presence of the staff of the Barclays bank and their added help. Plus Dstv was at hand with their Dstv Walkas and other decoders.

The night started bright and early with people streaming in as the jam outside cleared. Our flamboyant host Edward Kwach cruised in with all his vocal splendor. The in no time it was time to separate the true sports fans from the groupies. After a spirited fight, these were the top teams:-

  1. Armchair Analysts
  2. Another van full of pakistanis

The armchair analyst were the defending champions and solidified their claim to the crown with a second hefty check the second time round. Who will dethrone these sports fireballs? Tell a friend to tell a friend to tell other friends to come down to Blanco’s next month for the 12th Bingwa Sports Quiz.

Another van of pakistanis might have as well been the winners because they only lost by one point to the winners. They are however true sports people as they still had a ball afterwards and seemed to have motives of bringing the roof down with their enthusiasm.

Before I forget, there is the guy who won the Dstv Walka from the individual question session. Mr Keith!! Big up to you sir! This was his second Dstv Walka in a row!!He might start thinking of putting up a cabinet for that. I think his brain is segmented in Super Sport one , two , three and e.t.c  because to get those questions, you’re either Wikipedia or a certified sports genius.

BIngwa will be back and certainly bigger. Mark the first wednesday of each month as a sacred day to all who claim to be sports fans. Next month it will be on 7th of November. See you there!!

Boundless Creativity + time to burn= Fun!!!

Its the month of October and because they scraped off another reason to drink, A.K.A. public holidays, lets create our own excuses. Surfing through the internet reveals that when people have time on their hands, anything they come up with seem perfectly logical to them. So below I have a list of some of the most peculiar competitions and sports that are around. Maybe one day after the usual dose of time on twitter and pubs, we might make an allowance to indulge in some few atrocities too.

1. Wife carrying competition

If this was done here in Kenya, some people would pay good money just to watch their friends attempt to carry their wives. it is not a secret that the wedding ring in Kenya seems to inject automatic baking powder into married women and they balloon up to sizes that even they didn’t know they could reach. The objective of game is usually to carry your wife all the way through an obstacle course and the first man to cross the finish line with his wife, wins beer the equivalent of his wife’s weight. Pretty cool and hilarious right?

2. Midget throwing Contest

This cracked me up. Who does that? Apparently, this game is in Australia and it was almost banned because it degrades the dwarfs. But people argued that it denies the midgets a chance to make extra income! Really. Its like tossing kids with a heightened(pun intended)sense of humor. It just looks wrong  just by the sheer size of them. It is a bar attraction in which dwarves wearing special padded clothing or Velcro costumes are thrown onto mattresses or at Velcro-coated walls, participants of the contest compete to throw the dwarf the farthest.

If introduced, can this game really fly in Kenya?

3. Extreme Ironing World Championships

Have you heard of mascularization of house chores? Well, you’ve heard it now. These men are going to extreme measures just to get some chores done. I bet their wives have never asked them to iron clothes again after these stunts. It is outrageous to ask your husband to iron clothes then he goes underwater and comes back with the clothes unironed and wet to boot because he couldn’t find a socket!!? I bet this sport was invented by a husband with a twisted sense of humor.

It started in Leicester, UK in 1997, and is an exciting and dangerous sport where anyone who would like to participate should be ready for ironing a few items of laundry, preferably on a difficult climb of a mountainside, ice or under water.

4. World Sauna Championships

When you hear sauna, you immediately think of relaxation and bliss. But imagine sitting in there for an infinite amount of time until you feel that you cannot take it any more and  your behind is on fire. Well, welcome to the world of sauna champs.

Competitors from over 20 countries take part in the competition at their own risk, an

d have to sign a form agreeing not to take legal action on the organization. The competitors must sit in a 110° sauna and half a liter of water is added every 30 seconds. They must sit erect with their thighs and buttocks on the seat. They cannot touch any surface with their hands and forearms have to be in an upright position and must stay on their knees. The person who sits longest is the winner.

Disclaimer: Someone once died in this game so I wouldn’t recommend it!!!

5.Kenyan Flavor

Well, just for good measure, I throw in some local flavor. I bet the Kenyan Bull fighting and cock fighting would rank highly in bizzarness.  Not forgetting donkey derby in Lamu at the Lamu culture fest. That is the home of pampered donkeys.

From the list, its clear that traditionalists where not entirely primitive and boring. They did have their own version of fun! Join in the cheer!!
